10 Day Northern Sumatra Extension with Jungle Trekking (2D/1N)

Day 1: Airport - Medan

Upon arrival in Kuala Namu airport, you will be transferred to your hotel. The rest of your day is free.

Day 2: Medan - Bukit Lawang

In the morning you will take a Motorized Riksja Tour to visit an organic farm, kampung and brown sugar making. You will also visit the market where you will buy some items (fish, vegetables, food ingredients, etc) for your cooking class. In the market, you will interact with local people. Afterwards, you will go from Medan to Bukit Lawang. On the way, you will leave Medan's busy atmosphere and entering the calm villages of Bukit Lawang. This is a transfer only, no stops included.

Day 3: Bukit Lawang - Trekking Leuser Park

After breakfast, you will start the 2 days/1 night Jungle Trekking tour. Explore Leuser National Park, with its tropical flora and fauna. You might even have the chance to to see Orang Utan in their own habitat, as well as other kinds of animal such as Thomas leaf monkeys, long tail macaque, gibbon, black gibbon. Overnight in tent or shelter in the jungle. Lunch and dinner provided.

What to bring
Bukit Lawang - 2 Day/1 Night Jungle Trekking + Tubing
Shoes with good soles, long sleeved shirt, long trouser, sock protectors, raincoat/poncho, raincover for backpack, insect repellent and first aid kit, flashlight, sleeping bag (if needed), sport sandal/slipper (for river crossing), drybag (for wallet, mobile phone, camera, etc).

Day 4: Bukit Lawang - Continue Trekking and Tubing

After breakfast, you continue your trekking to explore the primary tropical rain forest and wildlife living in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, you will arrive at Aras Pinang from where you go back to your hotel by tubing the Bohorok River (around 40 - 50 minutes).

Day 5: Bukit Lawang - Berastagi

The trip continues to the beautiful, lush town of Berastagi (1300 m). This mountain town is located about 70 km south of Medan. Berastagi has a cool climate, which is ideal for the cultivation of different fruit and vegetables. The market, with its exotic fruits such as durian, rambutan, and Markisa salak, is worth a visit. From Berastagi, you can visit one of the nearby villages of the Batak with their huge wooden communal houses. The Batak can be divided into six tribes, each with their own language and traditions. Various stops can be made along the way to the destination.

Day 6: Berastagi - Climb to Sibayak - Lake Toba

Today you will go from Berastagi to Parapat (Harbor). On the way, enjoy the cool mountainous air of Berastagi and upon entering Parapat (Harbor) area, enjoy the view of Lake Toba from above as you slowly drive to the harbour. Various stops can be made along the way to the destination.

You will be picked up from your hotel and will take a journey for around half hour to the starting point of the climb up to Sibayak. It is recommended to start early as you have more chance for an open sky without too many clouds. Start walking, following a broad and steep road. You will be surrounded by forest and often hear the calling of the black siamangs & gibbons. After a short while, the path gets narrow and you find yourself surrounded by mountain vegetation. The last part of the path will take you through rocks until you reach the edge of crater where you can see sulfur puffing from vents. Views are breathtaking! To return you can choose to go back the same way or return on the other side of the mountain following staircases (in a bad condition) all the way down. Before taking you back to your hotel, you can visit and swim in the Rajaberneh/Sidebuk Hotsprings debuk which great to soak your sore muscles.

(Starting at 06:00, this program will take around 5 hours, including a two hour hike up to the top of Gunung Sibayak. Several beautiful trails will lead to the crater rim. Take a short rest at the top before going down a different, but more challenging, trail. When you arrive at the bottom, you can go for a soak and some swimming in the hot springs before heading back to the hotel.)

Day 7: Lake Toba, Cycling Tour

After breakfast, start exploring Samosir Island by bike to see the activities of local people such as visiting children at a school, visiting a village where locals make traditional hand weaving and other activities.

Please note the bicycles are from rental shops on Samosir Island, and are not insured. Any loss or damage will be at your own risk.

Day 8: Lake Toba, Free Day

The day is free for you to explore on your own.

Day 9: Lake Toba - Medan

Today you will go from Parapat (Harbour) to Medan. Along the way, you will drive past winding road with the view of Samosir Lake before entering the hustle and bustle of the city of Medan. Various stops can be made along the way to the destination.

Pedicab Tour in Medan: Breakfast at hotel. Pick up at hotel and drive to Deli Tua Market. Enroute, stop to take pictures of the rice fields. Arrive at the market and walk in the street market where you can talk to the sellers of fish, vegetable and fruit. In the market, you can also see the process of making pancakes, which are being sold at any time of the day. The market is very colorful since all fresh vegetables, fruit, and fish are available. Drive to the home industry at Pak Anwar’s house. Here you can see and learn how the local snacks and cakes are made. Return back to the hotel.

Day 10: Medan - Departure

You will be picked up from your hotel and will be transferred to Kualanamu International Airport. This is a transfer only, no stops included.
